For the Beef Patties

  • 1.5 lbs ground beef Select lean ground beef for best results.
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder Adds subtle warmth.

For the Gravy

  • 2 cups milk, divided Used in the gravy and to keep the dish creamy.
  • 0.25 cup all-purpose flour Thickens the gravy.

Main Ingredients

  • 4-5 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced Provides a comforting base.
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced Adds flavor and aroma.
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese Melty topping adds richness.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F and grease a 9x13 baking dish.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Form into six equal-sized patties.
  • Brown the patties in a skillet over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes per side. Once browned, set aside.

Making the Gravy

  • Using the same skillet, whisk together 1 cup of milk and flour until smooth. Gradually add in the remaining milk, seasoning with salt and pepper.

Assembly and Baking

  • Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the greased baking dish, followed by half of the sliced onions. Place the browned patties on top, then repeat with the remaining potatoes and onions.
  • Pour the prepared gravy over the layered ingredients, covering everything well.
  • Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for about 1 hour.
  • After an hour, remove the foil, sprinkle shredded cheddar on top, and bake uncovered for another 15 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.

Notes

Consider adding chopped fresh herbs like thyme or parsley to the beef mixture for extra flavor. Substitute russet potatoes for Yukon gold or sweet potatoes for variation. Lean ground turkey can replace beef for a lighter dish.
