  • 1 large egg Used to bind the mixture.
  • 1/3 cup plain breadcrumbs Adds a slightly crispy texture.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce Enhances flavor profile.

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder For additional flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt Adjust to taste.
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper Adjust to taste.

For the onion gravy

  • 1 tablespoon neutral oil For cooking the patties.
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter Creates a rich gravy.
  • 2 medium yellow onions Thinly sliced for caramelizing.
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour For thickening the gravy.
  • 2 cups low-sodium beef broth Base for the gravy.
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce Enhances flavor further.
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme Optional for herbal note.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, beaten egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, minced garlic, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
  • Divide the mixture into six oval patties, making an indentation in the center of each.

Cooking the patties

  • Heat the neutral oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and sear for 3 to 4 minutes on each side until browned.
  • Transfer the patties to a plate and keep warm.

Making the gravy

  • Reduce the skillet heat and add the unsalted butter and sliced onions. Cook until the onions are soft and golden, about 6 to 8 minutes.
  • Sprinkle flour over the onions, stir to incorporate, then slowly whisk in the beef broth.
  • Add Worcestershire sauce and optional thyme, allowing the mixture to simmer until the gravy thickens.

Final assembly

  • Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet and spoon gravy over them. Simmer for about 8 to 10 minutes until the center reaches a safe temperature of 160°F.
  • Let the steaks rest in gravy for 3 minutes before serving.

Notes

Serve with creamy mashed potatoes or fluffy rice to soak up the gravy. Consider adding a splash of soy sauce for enhanced flavor, or mix in sautéed mushrooms with the onions for variation. Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for 3 months.
