Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for 20–25 minutes, stirring frequently until caramelized.
  • Stir in the minced garlic and thyme leaves, cooking for an additional minute.
  • Fold in the shredded chicken and season with salt and pepper.
  • Add the uncooked orzo, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir and bring to a gentle simmer.
  • Remove from heat and fold in sour cream and half of the Gruyère cheese.
  • Transfer to the baking dish, spreading evenly.
  • Top with remaining Gruyère and mozzarella cheese.
  • Bake uncovered for 20–25 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Broil for an additional 2–3 minutes for a golden crust.
  • Garnish with chopped parsley before serving.

Notes

For an elevated dish, caramelize onions slowly over low heat to develop sweetness. A mix of cheeses can add complexity; consider using Swiss cheese or cheddar for a sharper taste. Serve with a crispy side salad or toasted bread.
