  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Optional; helps prevent browning.

Batter

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Provides the basic structure of the batter.
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar For a touch of sweetness.
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder To aid in the fluffiness of the batter.
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon The star of the dish.
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg Adds warmth and depth.
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine salt To enhance flavors.
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk For creaminess and tang.
  • 1 large egg Binding the batter together.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract A hint of warmth.

Frying

  • 4 cups neutral oil For frying, allowing the flavors to shine.
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar For coating and sweetness.
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon For the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  • Powdered sugar or caramel sauce Optional, for serving.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Wash, peel (if preferred), and core the apples. Slice them into 1/4-inch rings. Optionally toss the apple rings with lemon juice to prevent browning.

Coating

  • In a shallow bowl, combine 1/2 cup sugar and 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon to create a coating.

Batter Preparation

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, 2 tablespoons sugar, baking powder, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  • In a separate bowl, mix the buttermilk, egg, and vanilla until well combined. Gradually stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mixing until smooth.

Frying

  • Heat neutral oil in a skillet over medium heat until it reaches 350°F.
  • Dip the apple rings into the batter, ensuring they are well coated. Fry them in small batches for about 1-2 minutes per side until they are golden brown.
  • Once fried, drain on paper towels to remove excess oil. Immediately toss in the prepared cinnamon-sugar mixture to coat.

Serving

  • Serve the Fried Cinnamon Apple Rings warm, optionally sprinkled with powdered sugar or drizzled with caramel sauce.

Notes

Use firm and crisp apples. Experiment with spices like ground cloves or cardamom. Ensure the oil is hot before frying to prevent soggy rings. For gluten-free, substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free blend.
