Instructions

Preparation

  • Start by cooking the lasagna noodles according to the package directions until they reach the perfect al dente texture. Drain them and set aside.

Cooking the Meat Sauce

  • In a large skillet, drizzle some olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef, Italian sausage, chopped onion, and minced garlic. Sauté until the meat has browned beautifully.
  • Incorporate the tomato sauce, tomato paste, and water, and sprinkle in your dried basil, oregano, sugar, salt, and pepper. If you’re feeling adventurous, toss in the red pepper flakes.
  • Allow this to simmer for 20-25 minutes, letting the flavors meld together.

Preparing the Cheese Mixture

  • In a large bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, 1 cup of shredded mozzarella, 1/4 cup of grated Parmesan, eggs, and heavy cream. Mix until smooth and creamy.

Assembling the Lasagna

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Spread a thin layer of the prepared meat sauce at the bottom of a baking dish. Lay down a few noodles, followed by a generous amount of the cheese mixture, and then more meat sauce. Repeat these layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with the meat sauce layer on top.

Baking

  • Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses over the top.
  • Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 25-30 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes or until the top has reached a golden brown and bubbly perfection.

Serving

  • Allow the lasagna to cool for about 10 minutes before serving to make slicing easier.
  • Garnish with fresh parsley and basil leaves before serving.

Notes

Let your meat sauce sit overnight in the refrigerator for enhanced flavor. Be cautious not to overload layers which can result in a soggy lasagna. Adding vegetables like spinach or mushrooms is a nutritious option.
