Main Ingredients

  • 10 oz wide egg noodles tender and delicious
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil smooth and fragrant
  • 1.5 lb ground beef 85 percent lean, juicy and flavorful
  • 2 medium yellow onions thinly sliced, sweet and aromatic
  • 8 oz cremini mushrooms sliced, earthy and rich
  • 3 cloves garlic minced, for that perfect aromatic kick
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme for added depth of flavor
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce enhancing the umami
  • 1 can condensed French onion soup providing the classic flavor
  • 3/4 cup beef broth adding moisture and richness
  • 3/4 cup sour cream creating a creamy texture
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt to elevate the flavors
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper for a mild spice
  • 1.5 cups shredded Swiss cheese or Gruyere melty deliciousness on top
  • 1 cup crispy fried onions for an extra crunch
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley optional, for vibrant color and freshness

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Cook the wide egg noodles in salted water according to package instructions, stopping one minute shy of the recommended cooking time. Drain well and set aside.

Cooking

  • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, about 6-8 minutes.
  • Sauté the onions and mushrooms in the skillet for 8-10 minutes until softened.
  • Reduce the heat and add minced garlic, thyme, Worcestershire sauce, French onion soup, beef broth, sour cream, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until warmed through.
  • Fold in the drained egg noodles until evenly coated.
  • Pour the mixture into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish and spread evenly.
  • Top with shredded Swiss cheese or Gruyere.
  • Bake uncovered for 15 minutes, until bubbling and cheese is melted.
  • Scatter crispy fried onions on top and return to the oven for an additional 5-8 minutes until golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven, let rest for 5 minutes, and sprinkle with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

For best results, consider browning the beef until it's nicely caramelized. Don't rush the onion and mushroom sautéing process; it will intensify their sweetness. For variations, consider adding vegetables like spinach or bell peppers or swapping in different cheeses.
